You just started your own a shop and you want a lot of shoppers, customers and window shoppers to drop by your shop. Now, you still don’t have a name for it. What would be a good name for your shop so that a lot of people would flock to it? You surely wouldn’t name it something as generic as “the store” nor “the shop”.If you are selling clothes, naming it “the clothes store” would also be to generic. This would have worked decades ago when you are in a monopoly and your shop is the only one of its kind in the area. People have no choice but to go to your shop for that certain item. But this won’t work today when there are hundreds, even thousands of shops selling similar items in one area. Naming your shop something as generic as “the store” would lose you customers.
This is similar to finding domain names for your site. Choose a domain name that would:

    1) Contain what your site is about. From the standpoint of someone who doesn’t know much about having one’s own website, when one searches the internet for an information, one would like to easily find the relevant information she or he is looking for. Rarely would one go through the whole list of sites that are relevant or containing one or two words keywords. One would only go over the first few sites and use the first site containing relevant information. Make it convenient to locate and find your site.

    2) Be specific and use hyphens if you must. Think of it as writing your own address. It’s like providing spaces and appropriate commas and periods in your address. When you asks friends to visit you, they would have an easier time locating the address “12345 176th St., Artesia, CA, 90701” than locate “12345176thStArtesiaCA”.

Regardless of what dot - .biz, .edu., .org – you domain name ends with, since there are already existing domain names without the dot, make sure to keep in mind the you are after making your site convenient to find. You want to have surfers locate your site easily. You want your site identified and located easily.
